Method and formula

For addition or subtraction, the fractions are converted to a common denominator. Multiplication combines numerators and denominators; division multiplies by the reciprocal.

Worked example

One half plus one third becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Two thirds multiplied by three quarters simplifies from 6/12 to 1/2.

What the result does not include

A denominator cannot be zero, and division by a fraction with a zero numerator is undefined. Inputs are treated as whole-number numerators and denominators.
